Bye-Bye, 2016

I cannot believe today is already the last day of 2016. Though honestly, I’m not too sad to say goodbye to this year. It had many good things of course, but both in my personal life and especially on a global level, 2016 really wasn’t a stellar year.

Despite this rocky year, I’m thrilled with how fantastic the last week of 2016 has been. My kiddo was on school vacation (her first big one) and I did NOTHING this entire week except playtime. I mean, yes, I kept up with house chores, but I did no work. No art. No blogging. I was mostly absent from the internet. I put off all my errands that weren’t essential. It was amazing. Just being with her, every day, fully present, soaking in the play time. I needed that. I’ve loved the days where I get to make art all day while she’s at school, but having her home again all day reminds me of how much I cherish that time.

Anywho, with my sappy parenting rant out of the way, let’s get on with bidding adieu to 2016! Dee from Princess Deia came up with some great geeky 2016 wrap-up questions, so let’s get reflecting!

Highlight: What one great thing happened to you this year.

The greatest thing that happened to me this year is that I took the opportunity to work on making art my career. I still have OODLES to learn about navigating freelance life, and it’s often scary and uncertain, but I am so thankful I even have the opportunity to give this a try.

Surprise: Be it TV show, film, game etc. that impressed you the most.

I have to pick The Raven Cycle series for this one. I’d heard a lot of hype about these books, and I was really unimpressed with the prologue when I started the first book. Luckily, I kept reading because this series is amazing. In the realm of TV: Sense 8 and Stranger Things – both unexpected and fantastic.

New Fandom: Did you gain a new obsession in 2016?

Not this year! My love for Pokemon was reignited thanks to Pokemon GO, and it’s been amazing to introduce something from my childhood to my own kiddo, but I don’t think I discovered anything new this year that I became completely hooked on.

The Comeback Kid: Was one of your fandoms rebooted, re-released, or re-imagined this year?

Well, we did get a lot of new Harry Potter world additions this year. I really loved the story of the Cursed Child (check out my full review here!) and I’ve heard nothing but good things about Fantastic Beasts! I’m excited to see it (eventually).

Still Going Strong: Did one TV show have an amazing season? Or did a book series have a truly impressive addition this year?

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo did not disappoint. I loved Six of Crows, and was thrilled to find it’s sequel even better.

Biggest Disappointment of the Year?

He Who Must Not Be Named, aka the USA’s President-Elect. I have never been more ashamed of my country’s people than I was on November 9th.

Event of the Year: (Be it a convention, viewing party, geek girl brunch etc.)

This one isn’t geeky, but in June I took my first ever friend-cation, aka a trip with my friends without our kids coming along. It was an absolutely amazing trip that I so needed. I love being a mom, but having adult time is so important too.

What are you looking forward to next year?

SO. MANY. THINGS. In fact, I have a whole post going up on Monday all about them, so you’ll have to check that out for the details!

Quick Fire Round
TV Show of the Year: Tie between Sense 8 and Stranger Things
Movie of the Year: Deadpool
Game of the Year: Tie between Firewatch and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Book of the Year: The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater
Album of the Year: Oh geez. I never buy full albums anymore. So I’ll go with discovering Electro Swing as a musical genre. I’m in love with it.

That’s a wrap for 2016! I’m looking forward to New Year’s Eve tonight. For the first time, we are going to see if our kiddo can stay up until midnight and ring in the new year. We have no plans, just the three of us snuggling with video games and movies tonight, waiting to toast in 2017 with sparkling cider. Just perfect. I hope you all have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve, and I’ll see you all in 2017!

How exciting to turn your art into a business. One of my good friends started out on red bubble and she is slowly selling her art. I think that’s great! It’s good to do something you love.

    • Kay

So true! Awesome that she is selling her stuff!

  • Fun! I think any time we are present with out little one is the best amount of time well spent! I’m glad that although this year was really crazy it has also been a great year in life and professional levels for you!

    • Kay

Thanks Dina! And yes, I completely agree about being present. Sometimes the hustle and bustle of life can edge that out, and it’s so nice to be able to have those moments of time together!

      • I hope I can find some room for presence for sure this year.

  • That sounds nice that you’ve been able to have some quality time with your daughter! Hope she’s able to make it until midnight! I know I’ll be in bed fast asleep by then lol Happy new year!!

Happy New Year to you as well! Somehow, she did make it! Though around 10:30 I thought she was going to doze off on the couch, but she got a second wind haha.

  • I just joined the freelance landscape myself! I’ve had a good start, but I’m worried about what will come next. Good luck with your work!

    • Kay

Thank you, and you as well Leah! I too have had a good start, but freelancing is always so uncertain. I definitely relate on the worries!

  • Electro Swing? That sounds amazing!

    • Kay

IT SO IS. I highly recommend anything by Caravan Palace or 11 Acorn Lane. (Caravan Palace is a little more modern, I think they are my current fave band of the genre.) Head to YouTube and binge!!!

  • Love this post! Christmas was a great opportunity to step away from blogging and a few obligations. It was nice to just take a break. Electro swing is so much fun to listen to. Hope you like seeing Fantastic Beasts, it’s such an exciting adventure.

  • Mia Moore

Happy New Year to you! Sounds like you had a fun year 🙂 I’m so glad you got to spend some quality time with your daughter and grow your own career too.

    • Kay

Thanks Mia! Happy New Year to you as well!

  • Happy New Year! I’ll need to add some electro swing to my playlist hahah!

    • Kay

Yesssss do it! Caravan Palace is amaaaaazing, they are my favorite band of the genre! A good place to start. 🙂

  • Gingi Edmonds Freeman

Sounds like you had a wonderful 2016!! Hoping you have a lovely 2017 my dear! <3 – http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

    • Kay

Thank you Gingi, and Happy New Year to you!

  • Happy new year to you, too! I really enjoyed this post, so I’ll be writing a response (bit late, but who cares). And I’ll have to look up those TV shows you’re talking about; I love finding new things to watch. ^^

    • Kay

Yay, I’d be excited to read your answers! I didn’t really stick with the pop-culture/geek theme for all my answers but oh well haha!

      • Haha. It will be a gliding scale, then. I thought yours was pretty geeky! Mine is even more personal… Oops.

  • It makes me so happy to read about how much you loved The Raven Cycle<3 I'm glad you were able to read one of my favorite series last year and I was able to start one of yours! (Lies of Locke Lamora) Oh! Have you started Pokemon Sun / Moon yet?!

    • Kay

I have! Though, I’m playing it with my daughter so it’s slow going since she’s only six haha. Plus, we got two other video games from ‘Santa’ this year so we’ve been rotating what we play. But so far I love Moon! It’s so cute seeing all the Alolan version Pokemon.

  • I agree: Deadpool is the movie of the year 😀 Also Stranger Things 🙂 Loved this post!

    • Kay

      Thanks Pepi! <3
