For the first year since my little was born, we are finally putting together a family costume for Halloween! Honestly, I don’t know why we waited so long. I think a lot of is basically poor planning; we’d always think of it WAY too late and never pull anything together. Plus, now that the kiddo is 5 she is old enough to have a lot of interest and input in what we dress up as. We let her take the reins for theme picking and she has (unsurprisingly) picked Pokemon! Both my partner and I are actually pretty thrilled about it being our first family costume attempt.
Currently, my kiddo’s favorite show is Pokemon XY. My partner will be Ash, I’m going to be Serena, and our kiddo is going to be Pikachu. She is pretty excited to ride up on Daddy’s shoulders just like Pikachu does on Ash in the show!
Honestly, I’m pretty nervous about putting this all together. Cosplay/costume planning is never something I’ve done as an adult, and the idea of putting together an entire family costume is daunting. Luckily, these costumes don’t require anything too out of the ordinary in terms of clothing items. But it all starts with a plan.
In my sketchbook I’ve broken down what we need for each character. I’ve adjusted the costumes a bit to be weather appropriate for late October in NH. We’ve had a foot of snow on Halloween before. Short sleeves and thigh highs just aren’t happening.
My kiddo will be the easiest, since we will order her costume. I’m still searching for the perfect one, but she will require basically nothing but facepaint. For my partner and I, I’m taking stock of what we have, and then hitting up thrift shops for the pieces. I’ve also started bookmarking the items online to order in case I can’t find what I need in time. Ordering online is the most expensive option for most of it, so I’m really hoping to avoid it as much as I can.
I’m so excited for our first family costume! It’s definitely something I want to make a yearly tradition from here on out. I’ll be writing a post with the finals of course so you’ll get to see us in all our costumed glory.
Are you (or your kiddos) dressing up this year? Have you ever made a costume or cosplayed? I’d love to know in the comments!
