5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Podcasts

So excited for today’s 5FF! Podcasts have been my jam lately. Since my daughter is starting school in the fall, my mum has been taking her for a full day each week from some one on one Mimi-time, since we won’t be able to visit much come fall. This means I’ve had one full day to myself each week for the last few weeks! Cue lots of art and my favorite podcasts.

favorite podcasts - fake goth girls

#1. Fake Goth Girls

Presented by the dynamic duo of Mia Moore & Liz Locksley, Fake Goth Girls has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. These ladies chat about anything from entertainment to self improvement to issues such as feminism and LGBT community. They are always hilarious, I love their laid back podcasting style, and they are so freaking relatable. I’m constantly finding myself nodding along with things and saying, YES YES ME TOO! One of my indie purchases last month was donating to Fake Goth Girls, and I squeed like a little (fan)girl when they mentioned it in an ep. They’ve just passed their 50th episode, so if you haven’t tuned in, do it!

#2. Lore
A recent discovery for me and I’ve already binged all that’s available! If you’re into horror and history, this is the podcast for you. Aaron Mahnke writes and hosts this fantastic podcast which examines the darker side of history, often taking a look at the real life events that have inspired many supernatural legends. It’s completely fascinating, with a good dose of spooky to boot. Highly recommended for any horror lover.

Invisibilia logo

#3. Invisibilia
This podcast from NPR takes a look at the invisible forces that drive human nature. They combine a story-telling narrative along with factual research for a very compelling and fascinating look at at human behaviors. If you’re interested in sociology, anthropology, or just enjoy examining why people do and think they way they do, this is one you don’t want to miss. Season 2 premieres today, and I can’t wait to tune in!

#4. Gastropod
I discovered this podcast via Gamerwife, and I am so glad I tuned in! As it’s tagline says, this podcast covers ‘food, with a side of science and history’. As someone who not only enjoys her food, but also enjoys gardening and growing food, I find this podcast fascinating. It covers so many different subjects within the topic of food, and it is always equally as entertaining as it is educational. Highly recommend!

#5. Common Room
Common Room is a podcast that covers all things pop & geek culture. I love the in depth discussions that arise and the often times deeper questions posed that ComRom ties together with all things geek – ranging from movies, books, shows, fashion, food, and more.

5 Fandom Friday was created by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick.

What are your favorite podcasts? I’m excited to add new ones to my list!

I haven’t gotten into podcasts yet, even though I know there are a ton out there that I’d enjoy. It’s just one more thing for me to keep up with!

    • Kay

I hear you! There are so many I”m subscribed to because they sound cool, and I’ve never even listened to an episode yet. One day!

  • Desiree

I use to love Lore, but then I was following the creator on Twitter, and well he’s kinda full of himself. The last straw was the way he replied to one of his listener’s suggestions. I usually try to be fair and separate creators from their work if I’m not too particular on them, but he has rubbed me the wrong way so much I can’t bring myself to listen anymore. Sucks cause I really enjoyed the show and it’s really well made.

Love the gals at Fake Goth Girls and CommonRoom. I’ll have to check Invisibilla out, I keep hearing about it.

    • Kay

Aw that stinks! I hate when you find out things like that about people. 🙁 I just started following the podcast on Twitter today, so we’ll see how that goes. I have the advantage of being terrible at keeping up with Twitter though, so maybe that’ll help me out in this case!
I definitely recommend Invisibilia. The first episode I listened to was about fear, and I was hooked!

      • Desiree

Maybe he won’t rub you the wrong way. Or better yet, maybe he’s gotten better with his tweets. And again the podcast is pretty great, I’m not trying to discourage anyone from checking it out.

  • First of all, I am completely in love with your new 5 Fandom Friday graphic! I had no idea that’s what you were working on drawing icons for but I remember loving your insta photo earlier this week! Podcasts have also become such a staple of mine and I’m really looking forward to checking out the ones you mentioned! I already just subscribed to a few 😀

    • Kay

Thank you Kristin! I’m really working on incorporating more art (even if it’s just icon doodles!) here on the blog – I’m glad you like it! Design in not my forte, but I’m definitely working on it.
I find podcasts so much less distracting than TV, and I’m learning to love having them on while I make art if I’m not in the mood for music. I hope you enjoy some new ones! 🙂

  • I haven’t heard of any of these! You just gave me hours to work with here!!! Thanks Kay! <3 <3

    • Kay

Yehoo! You’re most welcome, and I hope you enjoy them!

  • Yay, Common Room! I haven’t heard of any of the others, but I’ll definitely be checking them out! I love pretty much everything that NPR does, and Lore sounds really really cool! Also, I’ll say it again, your new 5FF header is fabulous<3

    • Kay

I almost included Hidden Brain on here (also NPR) but it’s much like Invisibilia and I like Invisibilia more so it took the spot! 😀 Lore is so great.

      And thank you again! <3

  • Lore and Invisibilia are favourites of mine too!

    • Kay

      Yesss! High fives!

  • Mia Moore

Kay, thank you SO MUCH for mentioning Fake Goth Girls! You’ve always been such a thoughtful and supportive listener and I really appreciate it. <3

    • Kay

You’re most welcome! You ladies put out a great show!

  • Mariah Kaercher

I have heard such good things about Fake Goth Girls! I will have to check them out

    • Kay

Do it! 😀 I really enjoy it; it’s very laid back, literally just two friends chatting, and I always find so much of it relatable. I hope you like it too!

  • Lore and GastroPod sounds so awesome! I’ve been meaning to listen to Common Room for so long because I like her website!

    • Kay

Common Room has a great variety of topics which is nice. I haven’t listened to every ep, but it’s nice to pop one on when the subject grabs me in!

  • Great list! Aside from Common Room, I didn’t know the other ones. I’m going to check Fake Goth Girls for sure 🙂

    • Kay

Thanks! And I hope you enjoy Fake Goth Girls!

    • Kay

      I hope you enjoy them!

  • I’ve been wanting to listen to more podcasts so I’m glad this was a topic on the fandom five thing! I’ll have to go check out everyone else’s list too. Common room is one that I def need to check out!

    • Kay

I love that Common Room has such a wide variety of geek topics. I think they have an OUAT episode too! It was interesting because two people love the show and one doesn’t, so you get a lot of discussion and I like that. I hope you enjoy any you try!
