Artist Interview: The Ninjabot

Today’s artist interview is one that I am so excited to share. I’d like to introduce you to the illustration work of Arnel Baluyot from The Ninjabot. I discovered The Ninjabot last year via their Pop Cats Kickstarter campaign (which was successfully funded!) From there, I checked out the Ninjabot shop where they offer a huge variety of prints from so many different areas of pop culture. Enjoy the artwork from The Ninjabot and getting to know Arnel a bit as an artist!

  1. How old were you when you knew that art would be a permanent part of your life? I was 9 years old when I started drawing. I remember it vividly. A friend of mine was drawing Wolverine’s arm and I remember being fascinated with how he did it. I couldn’t stop drawing after that.
  1. Do you consider art your career, or more of a hobby? I would consider it both. I consider myself a professional illustrator, but I find myself sketching or painting for fun and relaxation as well.

  1. Did you attend college or university for art? Do you think that has a big weight on how successful an artist can be? I did attend art school, and I did learn from, and enjoy many aspects of it. Ultimately however, I do not recommend it, and I don’t ย think it determines howย successfulย you are as an artist.
  1. What is your favorite medium to work with, and what supplies do you prefer? I love to use watercolor, gouache, and ink. I like using Windsor & Newton for my paints and Strathmore watercolor paper. I also enjoy inking with Pitt Pens and a Pentel Pocketbrush.ย

  1. Do you listen to music while you create? If so, what? I love listening to music while I work. I work primarily to film scores of my favorite movies like Lord of The Rings, The Martian, Star Wars, Man of Steel, and such.
  1. What is your favorite subject for your art (for example, human, animal, abstract, etc)? I really enjoy drawing people, especially portraiture. Robots would be a close second.

  1. What advice do you have for overcoming a creative block or rut? I always find the best way to get out of a rut is to talk to fellow artists. Artists tend to feed off of each others energy, and I always seem to be buzzing with new ideas after a good hangout out sessions with other artists.
  1. What is something you wish you knew when starting out with art? I wish I knew to hangout more with fellow artists when I was much younger. I always tended to be in my own little bubble. Bouncing ideas off of other artists really helps you grow.

  1. What is your biggest piece of advice for another artist? To just keep going and let nothing get you down.
  1. Will you share a few artists you admire? Oh my gosh there are so many. In no particular order: James Gurney, J.C. Leyendecker, Adam Hughes, Franklin Booth, Alphonse Mucha, Jim Lee, Olivier Coipel, Gil Elvgren, Phil Noto, Frank Frazetta, Mike Mignola, Norman Rockwell…just to name a few. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thank you so much, Arnel! I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am drooling over those watercolors. Be sure to check out the recently revamped Ninjabot site not only for print shopping, but also for their schedule of con appearances if you want to grab a commission in person! And make sure to give them a follow on Instagram and Twitter as well.

What’s your favorite Ninjabot print? I so adore that Furiosa at the top, and don’t miss the Poe Dameron print!
