It’s the first WIP Wednesday post of the year! Which ironically includes no works in progress. But I did want to share a few finished pieces of art from the last few weeks, and talk about some of the long term art projects I’m working on throughout 2016.
This piece was done for my little miss for Christmas! Her faves are the princess ponies. She loved it, and I had a lot of fun doing it! Coming up with the composition was fun, and even though I had to fudge some of the colors since my Copic selection isn’t too huge, I think it came out really well!
My first completed piece of 2016! And honestly, I’m not really pleased with it. I drew this as lighting study practice, and there are parts I’m really happy with. The reflections on his mask, mainly. I’m just not pleased by the light saber. It was the first thing I starting adding color too, and I definitely think I should have added it in last. But, by the time I realized what I should have done with it, it was too late. That’s why we practice though, yeah?
And lastly, this sketch of Jessica Jones. I drew this after finishing the show. It was around midnight, and I went into it without a plan really; just one of those times I felt like drawing while I digested all that happened in the season. However, I really like the sketch, so I may end up doing something with it later!
As for other projects, like I said in my goals post, art is basically my focus of this year. I need to get in the habit of consistently making art. I make art pretty frequently, but I definitely want to give more focus to what I’m creating, instead of just drawing stuff on a whim, and leaving things half finished if I move on to something else.
To keep me on track, and improve my sketching skills (and confidence!) I’ll be sketching daily (joining in Mary Doodle’s #dailydoodle2016) and Tatyana of Love Teacup Kisses is also doing a #weeklyfive drawing challenge to have five semi-polished pieces each week. I’m not sure I’ll hit that goal, but it’s great to follow along for inspiration, and I’m working on another side project I’m dubbing ‘Inspirational Ladies’ which will tie in to the weekly five goal. I’ll talk more about the Inspirational Ladies project in my Focus series here on the blog.
Other than that, I’ve set myself the goal of three finished pieces for the end of January (aka, not just sketches in my sketchbooks). Since Kylo Ren was just a practice piece, I’m not actually counting him even though he was completed this month. I feel like I’ve given myself high goals, but I really want to get into the habit of drawing more frequently than I do.
Overall, I am quite thrilled to be actively putting more time towards art. It does leave less time for other things (mainly TV and video games) but that’s the choice I’m making, and it feels good! Since I’m using the time for something I love, it really doesn’t feel like I’m missing out. So I hope you’re ready for lots of art…I’ll have plenty to share! I post lots of WIPs and my daily doodles on Instagram, so be sure to follow along there too.
Do you have any creative goals for 2016? How do you go about planning for them?
