WIP Wednesday: #2

Today’s WIP Wednesday is a bit of a long one…along with some art to share, I wanted to chat about upcoming projects and how I’m adapting to putting more of a focus on making art. But before the chatter, let’s get to the art!

First up: I finally finished Thane. And oh, how I love him. Honestly, I loved almost every second of working on this. The sketch came together quickly, and I’m really falling so in love with Copic markers the more I use them. Overall, I’m really proud of this piece! Side note for anyone interested – he will be for sale when my shop opens in April. Email me if you’re interested in purchasing the original – first come first served! I have full plans to continue on with making fanart, because I’m a geek and I love my fandoms!

Next up is Rey whom I made as a companion to my Kylo Ren piece you saw earlier in the month. I have plans for these two, which you readers should be excited about! Stay tuned in early February for details! Anywho, a bit about Rey – while I’m happy with the end result, much like Kylo Ren I have trouble seeing past the flaws. I ran out of my E00 Copic marker just as I started the face shading which left her face in a streaky wreck.

To make a long story short, I couldn’t find any E00 refills at a reasonable price or ship time, and had to order a completely new color and hope it was acceptable. It ended up being a good choice, but I still feel her face is overworked. And the background…I suck at backgrounds which is why they’re on my list of things to work on this year. I like the starry shenanigan I did, and the blue hue to pair with Kylo’s red (light side, dark side, all that jazz) but I definitely need to work on better blending techniques with my Copics.

I also wanted to share these gorgeous sketchbooks with you! These were from a Kickstarter project I backed and the covers feature art by Kerby Rosanes, whom I’ve been following for ages. His work is just stunning. Currently, I’m using two of them for some new portrait projects! I’m not quite ready to introduce them here yet, but the focus will be on drawing sketchier style portraits. I’m hoping to work on practicing capturing a likeness or expression and being able to have that come across in a quicker piece vs one where I spend hours of work. I definitely need practice with sketching since I tend to get quite caught up in perfecting the details.

I mentioned in my last WIP Wednesday that I was going to attempt to follow along with Mary Doodles #dailydoodle on Instagram. I’ve kind of given up with that. Honestly, it falls into what I was talking about in my latest productivity post – doing something because I feel like I SHOULD not because I have an innate desire. If I feel like aimlessly sketching then I will, but I’m not holding myself to a random drawing every day. I’d much rather be working on the projects I have going!

In February I will be doing my best to keep up with #weeklyfive which I heard about on Love Teacup Kisses blog. The focus is to have five pieces of art made at the the end of each week, and I think it’s a great way to keep on task and also to keep up with my portrait project I mentioned above.

So that’s what I’m up to in art land lately! I’m working on lots, but I’m making the time for it and it’s endlessly satisfying. I’m excited to keep up the momentum!

What creative projects have you been working on lately?

I’m totally obsessed with your Thane!! GREAT JOB! I romanced him in Mass Effect 🙂 I’m just getting into using markers. I haven’t used Copic markers yet. But after seeing your Thane, I might need to pick some up.

    • Kay

Ah thanks! I dropped a STUPID amount of money on a huge set last year, and honestly I’m so freaking glad I did. I absolutely love them. I’m still finding a technique I like with them, and it’s so much fun to practice with them! I hope you try them – I’d love to see what you come up with!
