WIP Wednesday: #1

It’s the first WIP Wednesday post of the year! Which ironically includes no works in progress. But I did want to share a few finished pieces of art from the last few weeks, and talk about some of the long term art projects I’m working on throughout 2016.

MLP Art
This piece was done for my little miss for Christmas! Her faves are the princess ponies. She loved it, and I had a lot of fun doing it! Coming up with the composition was fun, and even though I had to fudge some of the colors since my Copic selection isn’t too huge, I think it came out really well!

Kylo Ren

My first completed piece of 2016! And honestly, I’m not really pleased with it. I drew this as lighting study practice, and there are parts I’m really happy with. The reflections on his mask, mainly. I’m just not pleased by the light saber. It was the first thing I starting adding color too, and I definitely think I should have added it in last. But, by the time I realized what I should have done with it, it was too late. That’s why we practice though, yeah?

Jessica Jones Sketch

And lastly, this sketch of Jessica Jones. I drew this after finishing the show. It was around midnight, and I went into it without a plan really; just one of those times I felt like drawing while I digested all that happened in the season. However, I really like the sketch, so I may end up doing something with it later!

As for other projects, like I said in my goals post, art is basically my focus of this year. I need to get in the habit of consistently making art. I make art pretty frequently, but I definitely want to give more focus to what I’m creating, instead of just drawing stuff on a whim, and leaving things half finished if I move on to something else.

To keep me on track, and improve my sketching skills (and confidence!) I’ll be sketching daily (joining in Mary Doodle’s #dailydoodle2016) and Tatyana of Love Teacup Kisses is also doing a #weeklyfive drawing challenge to have five semi-polished pieces each week. I’m not sure I’ll hit that goal, but it’s great to follow along for inspiration, and I’m working on another side project I’m dubbing ‘Inspirational Ladies’ which will tie in to the weekly five goal. I’ll talk more about the Inspirational Ladies project in my Focus series here on the blog.

Other than that, I’ve set myself the goal of three finished pieces for the end of January (aka, not just sketches in my sketchbooks). Since Kylo Ren was just a practice piece, I’m not actually counting him even though he was completed this month. I feel like I’ve given myself high goals, but I really want to get into the habit of drawing more frequently than I do.

Overall, I am quite thrilled to be actively putting more time towards art. It does leave less time for other things (mainly TV and video games) but that’s the choice I’m making, and it feels good! Since I’m using the time for something I love, it really doesn’t feel like I’m missing out. So I hope you’re ready for lots of art…I’ll have plenty to share! I post lots of WIPs and my daily doodles on Instagram, so be sure to follow along there too.

Do you have any creative goals for 2016? How do you go about planning for them?

  • B.

Um, that Kylo Ren is AMAZING!

    • Kay

Well thank you! I guess my issues with it is are it’s just NOT what I visualized in my head, you know? But now I’m all excited to draw another and improve! 😀

  • Ahhh! I am just continuously blown away by your art with every piece that you post. That Kylo Ren is AMAZING. And OMG the Princess Ponies! Princess Celestia’s mane is so magical! You absolutely have to start selling prints of your work online or exhibiting at conventions or SOMETHING!

    • Kay

That’s legit at the TOP of my goal list this year! Thanks for your support, it means a ton! And as for Kylo Ren, my main problem is that it’s just not what I picture in my head for the final product – but now I’m excited to draw another and see if I improve at all! 🙂

  • I am so jealous of people with artistic ability! Your work is so GOOD.

    • Kay

      Thank you so much!! <3

  • xoGeek

You are an inspiration to stay active! The ponies are so cute, and I know Jessica is going to look amazing! You’ve got this!

    • Kay

      Why thank you!

  • Argh, so talented! Kylo Ren turned out EPIC and that Jessica Jones sketch looks just like her! And those Ponies?! You’re awesome, miss Kay!

    • Kay

Aww thank you Ashlee! My main problem with Kylo Ren is that it didn’t turn out the way I pictured it would in my head if that makes sense? But I’m excited to do it again and see how it turns out! Thanks again!! <3

  • Sonya

Holy CRAP, I love all of these! I think I’m particularly fond of the colors in the MLP piece, but they’re all so wonderful! I’m really hoping you do something with Jessica Jones just because I love the character.

    • Kay

Thank you! I definitely plan on it. I really like that sketch, so I may just keep it as is, scan it, and trace my own art to make a new piece with it!

  • Danielle Knapp

These are all fantastic! If you don’t mind me asking, did you ever taking drawing classes or anything or is this just all been developed on your own. I used to take drawing in high school and loved it but sadly now cannot draw very well at all and would love to start learning.

    • Kay

I don’t mind at all! I attended an art college, but only for one year. That was my first and only experience with specific art classes (and it was wonderful, but too expensive for me to continue, along with a bunch of other reasons). Other than that, I’ve just been drawing semi-seriously since I was 11 with no instruction, just drawing what I see. I started out with anime, and around high school fell in love with portraiture. Honestly, I truly believe drawing is a learned skill. Obviously, some people have natural inherent talent, but practice consistently and you will see results!

  • These are wonderful, and I especially love the Jessica Jones sketch! Thanks for sharing these! I’m so looking forward to what you draw next! 🙂

    • Kay

      Thank you so much! <3

  • christine

!#%! Kylo Ren! I agree, his mask looks amazing. Everything looks great … Even your art supplies are beautiful!

    • Kay

Thanks Christine! I’ve been having so much fun setting up shots for the new blog look. 😀 It lets me toy with my camera, and I always love that!

  • I love all of them, but especially Kylo Ren!

    • Kay

      Thanks, Natalie!

  • I love all of these, they look amazing! I think everything about Kylo Ren (huh, so that’s what he looks like in a mask – I haven’t seen the movie yet) looks great, also his light saber, but we often find it harder to be happy with our own work (sadly). Good luck with all these challenges, I hope they will inspire you to draw and doodle more <3

    • Kay

Thank you! And yes, it’s so true we are our own worst critics. With Kylo Ren, he just didn’t turn out the way I pictured the final drawing to look in my head, and that was disappointing, but I’m excited to draw him again and see if I can improve!

  • Oh my gosh, you are so talented. Even though I don’t like Kylo Ren that much I would definitely hang that amazing art at my apartment and be proud of it! And Jessica Jones’ drawing is amazing as well, great work! ^^

    • Kay

      Thank you so much!

  • Jas

I LOVE your art so much. Why are you not counting Kylo Ren?! I think it looks brilliant. Your portraits always capture the essence of the person too. So great. Keep creating!

    • Kay

Thanks so much Jas! Seriously, that is an amazing compliment…capturing expression and personality is something I strive for, so I love that it translates through. And I’m just too frustrated with Kylo Ren to count him haha! I’m actually excited to draw him again sometime, and hopefully improve some of the issues I have with him.

  • As always, love your work! Your use of color in the 1st 2 is simply fantastic 🙂

    • Kay

      Thank you so much!

  • I am so excited to see how the My Little Pony piece turned out! Ahhhh! I do need a print of that for my office! I think your Kylo Ren is amazing…

    • Kay

Thanks Kimi! I need to get a better scan/final image for my MLP piece if I’m going to make prints…as you can see the white balance is off and such. Photographing my art properly is one of the many things on my to-do list in the early months of this year!

  • Jessica Jones is really on point, I love that one the most of all these art pieces. Though the colors on the MLP are amazing!

    • Kay

Thanks so much! And I’m totally with you, even though it’s just a rough sketch the Jessica Jones is my favorite too!

  • Liz Keysmash

These are all lovely! Can’t wait to see what else you’ve got in store for the year.

    • Kay

      Thank you, Liz!

  • Love your Jessica Jones sketch!

One of my goals for 2016 if to complete my writing portfolio so that I can begin submitting short stories to magazines and apply to an MFA program, so I’m making myself write for at least 30 minutes a week on something that’s *not* for school or my blog.

    • Kay

That’s fantastic; a great goal! I need to get a portfolio together as well…another thing to add to the to-do list!
