Family Costume Reveal!

Halloween this year was such a success! As I mentioned in quite a few posts, this was the first year we did a family costume. Our daughter picked the theme, and she went with Pokemon!

Family Costume 2016 - Pokemon XY

My partner was Ash, I was Serena, and she was Pikachu!

Figured I’d post a reference pic in case you weren’t familiar with Pokemon XY. And of course, we modified our costumes for Halloween in New Hampshire which is COLD. It was 38 degrees for trick or treating. BRRRRRR. (Oh, and Serena isn’t wearing her usual chunky white sunglasses on her hat in this pic, but she normally has them!)

A tuckered Pikachu getting a ride from Ash.

While these costumes were fun to assemble, they actually ended up being a lot more work than I thought! Well really, just Pikachu. I did not at all think getting a hold of a Pikachu costume would be difficult. However, the only ones I could find online were in adult sizes only, out of stock in my kiddo’s size, or only able to ship from China meaning it may not arrive before Halloween.

Perching on Ash’s shoulder just like in the show!

So I figured, welp, no big deal, I’ll just order a yellow sweatshirt and sweatpants, sew on some stripes and get one of the ears/tail Pikachu sets. Easy peasy right? WRONG. Plain yellow clothing apparently does not exist for any reasonable price. Either on Amazon OR anywhere else online that I could find. Frustration! Finally, I just ended up ordering a plain white sweatshirt and sweatpants off Amazon and dyeing them myself.

That turned out well, although the yellow dye and the purchased Pikachu ears and tail are slightly different color yellows but whatever. My kiddo was happy, and that’s what matters!

A good view of the back during her school parade!

I sewed on the stripes to the sweatshirt using plain brown felt. I also re-covered the brown section of the tail with the same felt I used for the stripes so they would be color matched, then sewed the tail to the pants. The shoes were thrifted and painted yellow, and I also had to paint some white gloves (the material they were made out of didn’t take the dye.)

Family Costume - Serena

For my Serena costume, I had to order the red skirt off of Amazon (it was only about $12.) I found the hat at a thrift store for $2 and spray painted it pink, then added some black felt for the band and the chunky white sunglasses (also thrifted.) I already owned black shirts and black leggings, plus my sneakers, and I just borrowed a white collared shirt from my mum for the collar popping out! I ended up layering three shirts + the button down because COLD. The multiple shirts did mean things got a little bunchy around my waistline from the high-waisted skirt but warmth > a super flattering look haha.

Family Costume - Ash

For my partner’s Ash costume I got both a blue sweatshirt and white hat at WalMart for super cheap. I painted all the red for his hat, and the white detailing for the sweatshirt (again, we modified the look for October weather.) His fingerless gloves were just a spare pair of work gloves I cut and painted the cuffs of red. Everything else (the black collared shirt underneath which you can’t see, the blue/grey pants, and sneakers) he already owned. In retrospect, I wish I’d done a bit more detailing on the hat and sweatshirt, but for a first attempt at any form of costuming I think I did all right!

Overall, I think I only spent about $75 on this project (a lot of which was on fabric paint, dye, etc.) which for three costumes I think is not too shabby at all! Sadly, my kiddo was NOT AT ALL into taking pictures on Halloween night so I don’t have many to share, but it was a successful night for sure! And definitely a first family costume success! My favorite moment was when a little boy dressed as Ash carrying a stuffed animal Pikachu saw my partner and kiddo as Pikachu and ran up to us saying, “LOOK MOM, A BIG ASH & PIKACHU!!!!” I didn’t snap a pic (other peoples kids and all) but it was such a cute moment!

I hope everyone had a super fun and safe Halloween! Did you dress up?

  • Ahhh you guys look awesome!! I’m glad you had fun! And that’s so frustrating about not being able to find a Pikachu costume. My boyfriend was manning the door for Halloween and said he saw like 11 Pikachu’s lol Quite the resurgence!
