Currently in August 2016

It’s been awhile since my last Currently update. I know we’re barely into August, but I figured I’d do a more thorough catch-post since I pretty much skipped out on July. Here’s what my Currently in August looks like:

Watching: STRANGER THINGS. Binged it in two different sessions with my partner (and our neighbor. Yay for close by friends!) I absolutely loved it. It was unique, paid great homage to so many 80s films, and was a great combination of sci-fi/paranormal/horror. I may end up writing a whole post about this show. I don’t usually write about TV/movies on my blog, but I want to address a couple things about this show. Mainly, I’ve heard a lot of people saying that Joyce (Winona Ryder’s character) is a “bad female character” or isn’t a “strong female character” and I think that’s such bullshit, and I’d like to explain why. Feel free to chat with me in the comments about it here too!

Reading: Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo, which is Book 2 of the Grisha trilogy. I’m liking it more than Book 1 (Shadow and Bone) which I will have a full review of coming soon. I’d heard a lot of hype about this series, and while I am enjoying them quite a bit, I don’t think they are masterpieces or anything.

Listening: Attempting to catch up with podcasts! Mainly Fake Goth Girls, Lore, and Invisibilia. I fell behind in July and am attempting to play catch-up while my daughter is at camp this week. Read about my top 5 favorite podcasts here!

currently in august - bathroom redo

Making: Some house changes. I’m currently working on plans to redo our main bathroom. It’s a really small bathroom so I don’t have a lot of space to work with, which is kind of nice and it doesn’t get overwhelming. I’m also trying to figure out some kind of art space for myself (other than our living room coffee table) since ideally, I’d like to start streaming some of my art soon! Woohoo!

Feeling: Positive. Hopeful for the future. It’s been a bit over a month since my relationship pretty much imploded, and things have been going really well. It’s still stressful, and there’s still a lot of work to do, but I think the most important thing is that we both want to be here, together, working out what we have to. That is a really good feeling.

currently in august - planners

Planning: Um, everything? Blog posts, art projects, room designs, you name it. I also really need to sit down and focus on putting together a plan for September. Come September, I get to start working on making art my full time job, which is utterly terrifying and exciting all at the same time. I work best with a plan of action, so I want to start planning goals and steps and things to do for when that time arrives, so I can go into it with confidence and a plan in place! Which basically means I’m making a shit ton of lists.

currently in august - sunflowers   currently in august - pumpkins

Loving: Blooming sunflowers. My daughter excitedly telling me about camp. Seeing my pumpkins start to ripen. Reading more lately. Snail mail from my BFF. Sending said BFF a big birthday package. The gladiola stand on the side of the road by my mum’s house. Having a new air conditioner. Getting some much needed rain.

I LOVED Stranger Things. It was one of those shows that grabbed you from the very beginning and didn’t let go.

Just checked out Shadow and Bone from the library. I destroyed Sarah J Maas’s series-A Court of Thrones in just a few days and checked this one out and Throne of Glass. Finished up Throne of Glass the other day and am Shadow and Bone tonight (hopefully!)

    • Kay

Completely agree on Stranger Things! It is so great. I’m excited to write a whole post about it! I hope you like Shadow and Bone! It definitely wasn’t bad, just had a couple tropes that were a bit annoying, but I kind of expect that in YA. I have heard SO much about ACOTAR, and also the Throne of Glass series – I want to read them sometime for sure!

  • A bad female character?! Oh hell no! Joyce is such a badass! I’ll need to read some of the arguments saying otherwise because I definitely don’t understand that. And it’d be so cool if you start streaming your art!! I’d watch for sure<3

    • Kay

Thanks lovely!! <3 Omg, I read an article on a blog I really like the other day ripping Joyce to pieces and I was like UH HELL NO. Though I didn't comment…too shy haha! To each their own I suppose, though I'm happy to write my own post about how wrong people are ahaha! xD

  • You should definitely check out Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology once you finish the Grisha series. As much as I liked the Grisha books, Six of Crows is so much more awesome.

    • Kay

I LOVED Six of Crows! I actually read it first, since I’d heard you didn’t need to read the Grisha series for it to make sense. I can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom! I’m enjoying the Grisha series, and I’m definitely liking Siege and Storm!

      • … we might have discussed this prior, now that you mention it. Sorry! 😀

  • Mariah Kaercher

Stranger Things has been getting such good reviews! I may have to check it out.

    • Kay

It’s really worth it, especially if you’re a horror/paranormal/sci-fi fan. I’m a bit young for the 80s demographic (I grew up in the 90s) but I’ve seen the iconic movies which is where most of the homage comes in so I don’t feel like I’m missing out on any references. I hope you like it if you give it a try!

  • Planning, planning and homework. Hahah!

    • Kay

The planning is always endless! 😀

  • Emma

I’m surprised that anyone thought Joyce was a weak character :O I was incredibly impressed with Winona Ryder, and all the actors/actresses for that matter. Joyce was one of the most relatable characters in the show. I don’t have children, but I can imagine that I would be just as neurotic as she was – she played it perfectly.

    • Emma

Also, major planner envy. You have a great collection there.

      • Kay

Thanks! I don’t know how to live without notebooks…

    • Kay

I completely agree, 100%! I’m writing up a whole post about it for Ashlee as a guest post, so we’ll have to discuss over there once it goes up!

  • Holy shit, Joyce was many things (and I didn’t always like her) but weak was NOT one of them. I finished it last week, and at the time I didn’t realize it was only 8 episodes! Imagine my disappointment when I realized there was no more ;_;

    • Kay

Yes, exactly!! I’m writing up a whole post about this as a guest post for Ashlee (Her Geekery) so we’ll have to discuss over there when it’s up! And I agree, 8 eps was so disappointing…but it was so well done I guess I can’t really complain haha! xD

  • gamerwife

Also totally agree with you re: Joyce in Stranger Things. You don’t have to be perfect in order to be a strong character. Her willingness to go into the upside down without a second thought to rescue her son is strength personified.

    • Kay

Exactly!! She showed her strength throughout the show – sticking to her guns, putting in the effort to find her son, refusing to accept people telling her she is crazy, kicking her deadbeat ex to the curb, and as you said, knowing she is ill equipped for a place like the Upside Down and not giving one fuck because IT’S HER KID! If that’s not a strong character, I don’t know what is.

  • Danielle Knapp

I’ve gotta watch Stranger Things ASAP – trying to finish up Torchwood first 🙂

    • Kay

Ahhh do it!!! It’s so good. I’ve never given Torchwood a try, but I really should. Capt. Jack all the way!!

  • I liked Stranger Things too, but what I liked the most was that it was only 8 episodes so I was actually able to finish it pretty quickly, lol

    • Kay

Ahaha I hear you on that!! I am ALWAYS behind on shows. I also like that with only 8 episodes, each one MATTERS. Like, there just isn’t room for filler type stuff – each moment is thought out and important. I can definitely appreciate that.
