Happy Mail Update

The other day I had the realization that I haven’t done a Happy Mail Update since I first launched the project. Oops! Time to rectify that. It’s been four months since I kicked off my Happy Mail project and it’s going great! I’ve sent out three pieces of art to three different people in my address book and it’s felt great! Creating a piece of art as a surprise for someone never ceases to bring my joy and happiness. March’s piece went to writer Sonya Cheney. Although we’ve never met in real life, I see in many ways a kindred spirit in Sonya, and was so happy to create a...

Happy Pride! Sense8 Fanart

sense8 pride header

Pride month is almost over, and I didn’t want to let it go by without creating some art to celebrate. As you may know, Netflix made the decision to cancel the show Sense8. Without turning this post into a rant session, let’s just say that I personally feel this is a horrendous decision given how important the themes found within the show are. It represents so much about humanity and diversity, how different people can connect and share so much in common. It also has an extremely diverse cast, and represents so many aspects of the LGBTQ+ community. I’d been wanting to do some Sense8 fanart for awhile, and it...

Readjusting

readjusting header

One week ago my kiddo officially began summer vacation. That morning, she and her fellow classmates put on an adorable presentation all about completing their first year of school. As a parent, it was such a wonderful, proud moment for me. Watching her flourish in school has been amazing, and it’s given me an opportunity to pursue art as my career. And now, as I’m readjusting to her being home all day for the next three months, I feel like that career has to be put on pause. Realistically, I know that isn’t true. I can still work on art during the day. But it IS different. I no longer...

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Today is superhero dress up day at school for my six year old daughter. When she brought home the flier about it a few weeks ago, the words immediately out of her mouth were, “I have to go as Moon Girl!” To which my nerdy parenting heart swelled and I had a mission to make it happen. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a fantastic comic, especially for the younger age group. It stars Lunella Lafayette (aka Moon Girl), a nine year old science genius who is bored to tears at school and terrified of the inhuman genes that lurk within her. Through some crazy happenings, she teams up with...

Travel Journal Prep!

Holy moly, tomorrow night I will be headed out of the country for the first time on a family vacation to Costa Rica! Since I’ve never been on a trip of this scale, I decided to take a travel journal with me for the sole purpose of drawing and documenting my trip. I always take photos (and I’ll certainly be doing so!) but I really like the idea of journaling each day and each adventure, and capturing those memories while it’s fresh in my mind. Figuring out what supplies to pack for my travel journal has been on my mind for months. As you all probably know, I primarily work...

Freelance Life: Thoughts So Far

I’ve been living the freelance life for a few months now. Nowhere near long enough to feel experienced or comfortable with it. In fact, I feel like as time goes on, I realize how little I know about being a freelancer. I mean, I know the basics. How to make art (woo!). How to keep track of my bookkeeping responsibly, for taxes and such. How to work with clients. But. Always a but. The more I continue down this road the more I feel like I am not on the same playing field as most freelancers, both in terms of quality of work and networking. I don’t say this with...

Artist Supply Source Site Review

Last month, a company called Artist Supply Source reached out to me about sending some supplies my way in exchange for a review of their site. I agreed, and they graciously sent me a Pentel Brush Pen, which is something I’ve been dying to try! Today I’m sharing the two pieces I’ve used the brush pen on, along with my review of the Artist Supply Source website. All opinions are 100% my own. Before I dive into the Artist Supply Source site review, I do need to rave about the brush pen. I love it so much! I definitely need more practice, but it is just so versatile in terms of...

Twitch Makes Me Feel Old

As I’ve mentioned in quite a few previous posts, I started live streaming my art on Twitch! And boy, is it a whole new world. *cue everyone singing Aladdin* I’ve always been a pretty tech-savvy person. I grew up with the internet and cell phones emerging as mainstream, I’ve always had computers and game consoles in the house, and there have been very few technological things that have thrown me for a loop. Even with blogging, there are few things I haven’t been able to solve with the help of a quick Google search. But Twitch. Oh boy, Twitch is it’s own animal. I had absolutely ZERO experience with live...
