2017 Goals

Ahhhh, 2017! I am quite excited to be welcoming in this new year. It’s only day three and exciting plans are already happening! My first trip out of the country is booked. I have tickets for my first Harry Potter con. Also, this version of my blog turned one on the first! I debated planning something fun for my first year in this new space, but realized I was quite okay with letting it slide quietly by. I love my blog, and I can’t wait to put out great content this year for all you awesome readers!

Onto my 2017 goals! For the past few years I’ve been enjoying setting goals at the beginning of each year. No matter big or small, I like the feeling of working towards something throughout the year. Here were my year-long goals for 2016, and how I fared with them.

#1. Start selling my art online. I did this! Well. I opened a shop, and even made some sales! BUT, soon after opening I realized that I’m not super happy with what I have to offer so I stopped promoting the shop at all (though it is still open). It’s a decision I do not regret. I did also make sales via commissions which were steady, yay!

#2. Save money. A big success! My partner and I didn’t touch our savings account ONCE last year, and successfully added over $1K into it. It feels great!

#3. Participate in the One Little Word project. Semi-success? I chose FOCUS for my word, and I’m still happy with that choice. But in the end, I don’t feel like I got much out of having a ‘one little word’. I don’t think I’ll be picking a word for this year.

Not too shabby! Granted, I only made three goals, but I’m pleased with completing them all. For 2017 goals, I’m going to up my game by making goals for multiple categories. Also, I plan to check in on these throughout the year to make sure I’m actively working on them year round!

2017 goals

ART

#1. Add new products to my art shop. Plans are already in motion for new things, and I’m excited to get drawing!

#2. Pursue more freelance clients and apply for editorial work. This is entirely new territory for me, but I need to put myself out there and go after more freelance work. It won’t just show up on my doorstep.

#3. Show my work locally. CUE HEART ATTACK. I want to bring my art to local galleries and shops and see about displaying it and also potentially stocking prints and products in brick and mortar shops.

BLOG

#1. Post twice a week. Tuesday and Thursday are going to be my posting days, and I’d like to stick to that for the whole year. Some weeks may include more posts if I’ve got more to share with y’all! I also have plans to bring back some things that fell off the boat last year which I really miss. Namely, Artist Interviews and Indie Shopping posts.

#2. Start an email list. GAG. The thought of this makes me so nervous. However, after countless hours of reading articles and watching webinars, I do understand why they can be a good thing. (I’ve got a post planned to chat about email lists, and I’ll go over this is in more detail.) For now, I need to focus on it’s content….what on earth would I write about to you guys?!

#3. Utilize Pinterest. I know Pinterest can be a huge traffic driver, and I want to take advantage of it. I’ve already started making Pinterest friendly images to pin for my posts, which I will continue.

PERSONAL

#1. Regular yoga & exercise. Honestly, the yoga aspect won’t be too difficult. I’ve done yoga pretty regularly for awhile now. I need to focus on not letting it slide around busy times (like holidays). Exercise is a whole other story. I am so inconsistent with it. I’d like to change that, for my mental health as much as my physical.

#2. Meet my reading goal. I set my reading goal to 40 books this year, which is the same as 2016. I met my goal last year (counting graphic novels, which Goodreads does) and I’d like to do it again this year!

#3. Learn Spanish. I already know a bit of Spanish. I took years of it in school and remember a lot more than I thought! The main reason for this goal is we are taking a trip to Costa Rica in April. We’re staying in a smaller village, so being comfortable speaking Spanish will be a boon for sure! I’ve been using Duolingo to brush up, along with studying in my own time. I’d like to continue learning even after our trip!

Let’s get cracking, 2017!

What are some of your 2017 goals? Let me know, or if you have a post on it, feel free to share a link in the comments!

  • B.

I think you have some awesome goals here! I need to get back into blogging, and I have some financial goals set up as well!

    • Kay

Thanks! I’m so excited about posting on only two days instead of trying to do three a week. I don’t know why I didn’t start doing this earlier haha!

  • Sonya

I love these goals! And I love the way you broke them down into categories (mostly because I love lists and sublists). I’m also glad to hear you did so well with last year’s goals, too. I actually didn’t have a “one little word” last year, and although I did pick a word for this year, I’m not necessarily considering it a OLW. I’m interested to hear how the email list goes because I’ve been thinking about doing a newsletter but I’m having such a hard time with MailChimp that I keep putting off even trying.

    • Kay

Listers unite! Seriously, I would not survive life without lists….
Ugh, the dreaded email list (speak of lists, haha). My biggest hangup with an email list is I have no idea what I would even write in it. I mean, I basically cover all I want to share in my blog posts. I’m sure once I get to actually trying to use MailChimp I’ll run into a whole slew of other problems!

  • So many great goals!!! Tuesday and Thursday used to be my preferred days to publish my posts too 🙂

    • Kay

Thanks Alice! I’m already so excited about only having two posts a week. I should have done this ages ago!

  • My personal goals are very similar to yours, expect I want to continue to learn French (because…Canada…)
I think you’re going to knock these goals out of the park this year, you got dis. 🙂

    • Kay

Thanks Stacey! Right back at ya!

  • Congrats on doing well on your 2016 goals! That’s awesome that you were able to save some money. That’s a big goal for me this year since I am a pro at spending it all lol

I am with you on the Pinterest goal! I use it a lot and I get a lot of re-pins on things I pin but not on my own content so much. So I’m planning to join some group boards which is apparently the key to success, but finding them and getting accepted is a challenging task!

I have a lot of blog goals in my head (which I should probably write down lol) so here’s hoping to successful years for us both! 🙂

    • Kay

Thanks Katie! I am a dunce at using Pinterest haha! I’ve just never put a huge amount of effort into it. I’ll have to start scoping out group boards!

      • If you need some extra help, head over to Thirteen Thoughts. Paula’s one of my favorite lifestyle/beauty bloggers and she KILLS it on Pinterest and then shares all her wisdom 🙂

  • I’m such a big fan of Duolingo! Keep it up, learning Spanish is an awesome goal and would definitely come in handy with your travels. All of your goals sound great! Can’t wait to see more pieces up in the shop, and it would be so cool if you can start selling your work in brick and mortar stores!
I haven’t managed to set any goals for myself this year, and I probably won’t since I’m so bad at following through with them every year haha. I did meet my reading goal last year though so I think I’ll bump it up this year!

    • Kay

Duolingo is SO much fun! And congrats on hitting your reading goal! I feel like I go up and down with reading…sometimes I devour books and sometimes it takes me a month to get through one.

      • Oh yeah, it definitely helps that I can listen to audiobooks at work, otherwise I really wouldn’t have time to get through many books either!

  • Mariah Kaercher

Being regularly physically active is one of the best things you can do for your body. That being said don’t freak if you can’t exercise. Everyone leads very busy lifestyles and I find that sometimes I can’t make it to the gym to exercise.

    • Kay

Thanks Mariah! I’m working on solidifying a daily yoga routine first, with extra exercise here and there. It’s mainly in winter time that I want to work on moving more since I basically hibernate for those months haha. I hate being out in the cold! Luckily, spring and summer brings hiking, playing outside, gardening, and long walks so I get a lot of ‘natural’ exercise then!

  • I wish you tons of luck this year with your art goals! You can do it!

I’m a huge fan of Duolingo! It’s how I’m learning Turkish!!! It’s really great!

    • Kay

Thanks Dina! And learning Turkish?! That’s awesome! Do you have any plans to visit Turkey (or other Turkish speaking countries?) I’m so excited to travel more (though I am a bit nervous about it!).

  • Awww yes for selling your art online!!! 😀 😀 😀 Please, remember to create awesome fannish art 😉 I love how you draw! <3 <3 As for Spanish, I can help! 😀 Let me know if you need a shout out for your art 🙂 Super happy to promo you!!
    xoxo

    • Kay

Eeee thank you so much Pepi! I really appreciate that! And yes, there will definitely be more fanart in my future…I don’t think I’ll ever stop making fanart! 😀

      • Yay!!!! 😀 😀 😀

  • Happy New Year! Best of luck on your goals for 2017!

    • Kay

Thank you Lyn, you as well!

  • All of those are great goals & your trip to Costa Rica sounds exciting. : D I hope you’ll be sharing your experience on t(and photos of course) on the blog.

    • Kay

Thanks Celeste! And yes, I will definitely be photographing and sharing all about it!

  • These are great goals, that will be so awesome for you to showcase your work locally! Good luck with everything! 🙂

    • Kay

      Thanks Jess!
